I QUIT

You’ve read the advice from inveterate PowerPoint apologists – and from the unhinged opposite end of the spectrum, Tufte. (His advice is to public speaking as Marx was to capitalism.) Now here’s some of my practical advice for presenters, based on 18 years’ experience.

What is the mantra you must repeat to yourself? It happens. Nearly every calamity listed below has occurred to me or to a presenter I have watched. [continue with: Advice for presentations: It happens! →]

Liveblogging a presentation at @media2007 London by Jason Santa Maria

(Shows an ad for Captain Noah, an event by the host of kids’ show on a Philadelphia TV station whose flyer he designed.) I haven’t even shown this to my parents. The reason this is bad is the details. Nothing here adds up. I didn’t even get the order of the rainbow right. It really gets down to art direction: What is the message you are trying to convey when you’re designing something? [continue with: ‘Diabolical Design: The Devil Is in the Details’ →]

Liveblogging a presentation at @media2007 London by Drew McClellan and Simon Collison

Andy Clarke introduces the presenters at 2007.06.07 12:06 (because somebody has to). Despite the fact that I can’t punch my way out of a paper bag – I’m a bit of a Wendy, actually – I’m a fan of heavyweight wrestling. Mr. Drew “The Dark Destroyer” McClellan and Mr. Simon “Collison” Collison. [continue with: ‘High-Noon Shootout: Design vs. Implementation’ →]

Mr. Q. Crisp, portrayed by his “representative on earth,” John Hurt, in The Naked Civil Servant (a film with Friz Quadrata intertitles):

Old man with blue-rinsed hair in brown jacket, pink shirt, and black ascot tells children: I defy you to do your worst. It can hardly be my worst. Mine has already and often happened to me.
You cannot touch me now. I am one of the stately homos of England.

I took Quentin Crisp to lunch circa 1994.
