“The untold story of Kobo” is actually a tale of building a company one step removed from couterfeiting. The entire Kobo business model amounts to opening a sluicegate through which mainstream publishers can stream OCRed, error-strewn “E-books” – and charge money for them.
Stated another way, Kobo’s business is selling defective merchandise. Kobo is so mediocre it could only have emerged here. Dan Morel has it quite wrong, in fact.
And now Kobo has been offloaded to the Japanese, who I guess are so bad at reading English they haven’t noticed their new merchandise is defective. (And incidentally, Morel labours under the misapprehension he’s writing in British English.)
